Anticipating Next Weekend

Our family enjoys traveling.  Because of the number of us, we usually go by car -- even long distances.  But this year, between health issues, job issues and just generally feeling overwhelmed by life on many days, we have not really traveled anywhere beyond day-trip local.

So when I heard that my nieces have a day off from school next Friday, I scrambled to make a three-day weekend out of it for our family and we are going to head up to Colorado Springs (never been) for the weekend.  It looks like there will be a lot of awesome autumn color, as well as a whole slew of fun activities available for our family.

One thing I'm really looking forward to seeing is the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo.  I was just reading about their prolific and well-known reticulated giraffe program there.  And you know I love giraffes!  Plus, they have okapi at the zoo, a close relative of the giraffe (I've never seen one in real life).

In addition to a giraffe cam, they have a meerkat cam -- which is probably my second favorite animal thanks to the show Meerkat Manor.

I'm so excited to visit this new-to-me zoo, but also to explore a new-to-me city!  I'm hoping for a fun weekend ahead.

P.S. Our intention was to visit our friends in Phoenix, but they forgot to consult with us before making their own plans to leave town!  Two very busy families ... it makes reconnecting that much more sweet when we can.

  1. Oooh, this will be a great trip... if you can work the Royal Gorge into the travel plans, you'll enjoy that. :)

  2. Wow, have fun! As you know, I was just in Colorado Springs in February. I didn't get to see the sights, really, but I know there are great things to do there, and my friend Holly loved it. Like Garden of the Gods!

  3. I don't know that I've read about the Royal Gorge, I'll check into it -- but definitely heard about Garden of the Gods -- also the hotel person (on the phone) recommended that to us. Then my therapist, today, told me about it. We've gotta go!

Also, learned that Focus on the Family's Visitor's Center is there. Our kids love the Adventures in Odyssey series and would enjoy seeing "Whit's End," there.

  4. Oh yeah, I saw highway signs to Focus on the Family, and I was surprised--I had no idea it was such a big deal that people go to visit for fun!

  5. Well, I've been to Cortez, Colorado for a motorcycle rally in May of 2001. I think that's when we went to the 4 corner states monument that you said is in the wrong place. Anyway, other than that (and maybe the airport), I haven't been to those exciting places you mentioned. Sounds great!

    Enjoy, love, Mom
